The Challenge

Although The Southern Co-operative had a successful core list in place, it was using several suppliers for its non-core purchases, some of which were unreliable in terms of delivery. Following the appointment of a new Head of Commercial Support, the organisation chose to review its non-core spend to ensure it reflected best value for the business in terms of cost and service.

With this objective, The Southern Co-operative enlisted a third party cost consultancy to review its supply chain and identify opportunities for improvement.

Our Solution

OfficeTeam has been a longstanding supplier to The Southern Co-operative for stationery and printed products. As a result, we were already a proven partner with a reputation for reliable delivery to The Southern Co-operative’s network of stores using our in-house distribution fleet.

In order to benchmark The Southern Co-operative’s suppliers, the cost consultancy asked us to submit a proposal for the non-core products we could supply. As well as stationery and print, this gave us the opportunity to quote for additional workplace products including janitorial supplies.

Our proposal represented a significant overall saving across these supply categories. In addition, it enabled The Southern Co-operative to consolidate these products with one supplier, available on a single delivery to each store. As a result of these cost and process efficiencies, we were asked to expand our service to span these product categories.

Now, The Southern Co-operative’s individual stores can order all of these products online using our OfficeTeam Connect portal, or by contacting our Customer Services team by email or telephone. We deliver all stocked items direct to stores on a next day basis, providing a rapid and reliable service.

The service is also supported by a dedicated Account Manager who is able to call upon our product experts across a broad range of specialisms to provide The Southern Co-operative with advice and guidance. This has led to the expansion of our consolidated service to include additional products and services. These include point-of-sale and marketing print, such as shelf-edge labelling, as well as sourcing several non-standard products from third party suppliers on The Southern Co-operative’s behalf. All of these products reach stores in consolidated deliveries fulfilled by our reliable, in-house delivery fleet.

In the first year, our consolidated service generated savings in excess of 18% against The Southern Co operative’s initial stationery, print and workplace spend. Our expansion into wider product areas has enhanced these savings further.
